I learned long ago to count your blessings

much time may pass in between them

Love and friendship is needed more than wealth

without them, you don't have real health

It's easy to wake up and hate the world

placing blame on outside sources

the school of hard knocks is learned as you grow

it's not part of required courses

To wake with a smile on your face

happy to belong, to someone, some place

Some days are harder no matter what you do

Mine became easier, in part, due to you

Weathering the Storm

Tossed upon the waters

Waves crashing over stern

fear of capsizing

has me white knuckled, holding course

Steady now, I'll right this ship

As best as I know how

Lone captain of this vessel

gazing onto the horizon

"Will we make it now?"

Mind Play

Your actions portray
what you fear to speak
I’m left to interpret
and show what you ask

I’ll put miles, not days
between us to let you wallow

in solitude

Veteran's Day

Today is November 11th

Today and everyday, I say thank you to all who serve. Past, present and future.

To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation.

Winter's Chill

Feel the blows of wintery breeze

Your heart is warmed in thoughts

Knowing she waits at home

Smiling to yourself

as you turn the knob to bliss

A simple peck upon the cheek

visions of what will be

when dinner's done and news is old

She'll warm and keep you from the cold

Behind Kind Eyes

Just as the serpent eventually strikes
my wrath will seek it's target
slithering slyly,out of view
waiting for just the right time
Eye to eye, face me now
deny your deserving repentance
circling round you, the scent of fear
anticipation, deadlier than the bite
only dead silence surrounds you

Unspoken

dismal and weary
day blends to night
numbness takes over
No will to fight

No longer the fool
I won't wait to hear
the words you've not spoken
are loud and clear

Descending

In dark of night,
among the trees,
Safety can’t be found
Frantic fear,
dreaded confrontation,
No hideaway in sight

Should I wait,
let you catch me
No longer can I outrun you

Each time, you take a little more
Leaving less spirit than before
No memory left, no tracks to trace
No proof of your existence

I lay down one final time

Internal death sets me free

Angel

Ten fingers and toes
Your name, no one knows

Never nurtured or fed
Plastic bag for a bed

Hidden from view
For a day or two

Ice on the ground
The day you were found

Angelic and sweet
Blue toes on your feet

A miracle they say
Yet, you're cast away

Sleeping Society

Sad to think it does not shock
Accepted almost by many
No longer do we shake our heads
Instead we whisper, Again!

Lack of outrage and horror,
Repeated throughout the world
When will we stop the disrespect
among our brethren?

When did weeping become shame
What’s wrong with outrage now?
Stand together for what’s right

Tides constant motion

Caught in despair

Burning pain with each exhale

Forgotten Heroes

Tattered clothing

hair full of tangle

emaciated face,

tells of woe

Impatient people

quick to degrade

Dismissed as a cause now lost

How does one get here?

A disgrace some will say

Turn away in disgust

Life full of promise

Served proud for us all

Forgotten, as if

No request for this mission

No bed for rest

Scraps of discarded food

Reflections of early years

Battle Hymns played

No questions asked

Too much to deal with

Death all around

Trapped in my mind, forever

No pension or address

Tin cup in hand

Spare a dollar for grub

Serving or begging

In Awe

I met a little boy today
He made me laugh and cry
His eyes they sparkled as he spoke
Now I wonder why

Those with little worries
Complain and whine the most
Yet this little wonder
Was such a perfect host

We spoke of sports and little things
Bike-riding and baseball too
Pitching, catching, fielding balls
There’s nothing he won’t do

Worry on his mother’s face
He’s weak and tired now
The only question on my mind
He smiles, happy. How?

You see this child is sick inside
Treatments fill his day
For lesser things most would fall
But that is not his way

I listen to him banter on
Planning far ahead
His dreams are of just one thing
To get up from his bed

My Aunt's a Butterfly

Wonderful colors you display Hovering ‘round my yard Without a second thought I watch you and wonder Why you’re here Again, each time I see you Hours you spend Fluttering by As if watching me Suddenly I realize She was in awe of you Now she has returned Your form she has taken It’s such a delight To see you again, now in flight
